Grandma’s Sausage Balls: A Holiday Tradition

Cooked Sausage Balls

It's been a hot minute since our last blog post (sorry, Fresh Leeks has been busy cooking AND growing!), but we just couldn't end the year without sharing another delicous (and festive!) recipe!

During the holidays, there’s a particular comfort in family recipes that transcend generations. For Chef Lee’s wife, the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without a plate of her grandmother’s simple (yet beloved!), sausage balls gracing their Christmas morning breakfast table.

Though the original recipe, which originates from the back of a Bisquick™ box, calls for just a handful of ingredients, its magic lies in its simplicity. Today, the recipe remains virtually unchanged, proving that great flavors never go out of style.

The Recipe: Grandma’s Sausage Balls

The foundation of this family favorite? A timeless mix of Bisquick™, savory breakfast sausage, sharp cheddar cheese, and just the right touch of seasoning. It’s the kind of recipe that you can whip up in no time yet impress even the most discerning of holiday guests.

Here’s the quick and easy recipe from one sausage ball lover to another:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground pork breakfast sausage

  • 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

  • 1 1/4 cups Bisquick™ baking mix

  • 1/4 cup milk or milk alternative (optional, for a softer texture)

  • Dash of cayenne or paprika for extra warmth

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

  2. In a large bowl, combine sausage, cheddar cheese, Bisquick™ mix, and spices if desired. Mix thoroughly using your hands until the ingredients are well incorporated.

  3. Roll the mixture into bite-sized balls, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through (165°F).

  5. Allow to cool slightly before serving, but don’t wait too long—they’re best enjoyed warm!

Pro Tip: These sausage balls are great served plain by themselves, but also served with several different dipping sauces such as honey mustard, balsamic dijon, pesto, marinara, queso, French onion and more! 😋

The Evolution of a Classic

While this recipe has remained steadfast over the years, there’s always room for creativity. Chef Lee, never one to shy away from his own experimentation, often adds a personal touch to the classic recipe.

Some of his favorite variations include:

  • Spicy Sausage Balls: Swapping the regular breakfast sausage for a spicy variety and adding diced jalapeños.

  • Herb-Infused Balls: Mixing in fresh rosemary, thyme, or parsley for an earthy flavor twist.

  • Cheese Lover’s Delight: Combining sharp cheddar with Parmesan or pepper jack for an extra cheesy kick.

These small tweaks ensure that the tradition stays exciting, while honoring the essence of Grandma’s (and Biquick's 😉😂!) original recipe.
